The idea of films being used to convey emotion is obviously very popular and perhaps the most popular is that produced by comedy. Early film presented a challenge as there was no audio and Chaplin managed be quite funny without the use of dialog. I suppose the ability to catch the audience off guard contributed heavily to this. The more impressive part of this whole thing is that Chaplin had to really pioneer comedy in this industry. He wasn't building off of anyone else's ideas but was completely original. There is certainly a cultural disconnect between the early films and what the modern day perceive as funny. However, I do manage to find the humor in the early stuff by attempting a mindset similar to the relevant time period.
The Rural Red Riding Hood by Tex Avery is actually one I remember seeing as a kid when my dad and I would watch looney toon esque Saturday morning cartoons. For me the style is nostalgic so i loved everything about it and thought it was hilarious. Watching mid 1900's cartoons now in 2016 make the obvious racism and sexism stand out, but at the time these were gold and people white men could care less. Still though, while the racism and sexism are disgusting they give the animated short a certain feeling. A feeling that its been preserved perfectly in its time. The ability of film to create a time capsule is incredible and I'm sure wasn't something the creators thought would happen but this accident grants the ability to study, learn, and experience the time in a way thats impossible otherwise.
