Virtual Reality

VR is something I have been following since the oculus announcement and have had an interest in for a long long time. i didn't think it would ever really take off as it failed pretty horribly in the 90's but its apparent that its taking off now. I have to say VR is the coolest thing ever. I'm in love with the idea and even the lowest end possible system (the google cardboard) absolutely blew my mind. I simply cannot wait to get my hands on one of the higher end systems to play around with. VR really is the new frontier and the next big thing and I don't think it will suffer the same fate as 3D TVs. Even for normal people who don't want to game i can see something like the Samsung gear being great for watching a movie on a plane and many of the other things that can be done with the technology. VR I believe is the new frontier waiting to be settled. there is so much to it and its really really amazing. I have actually ordered a Samsung gear VR to use on an upcoming road trip for movies and games and i must say that i am really pumped for it to arrive. VR really has a lot of potential and I really hope some people jump on board and make it more than a niche product. I found this hilarious video of somebody playing a zombie game of some sort using a more advanced system and it is just wonderful so go ahead and take a look.

A virtual reality for you and me!

Virtual reality is not a new concept but is making waves as the technology has developed greatly in the last two decades. It's advances include better hardware and software for a more in-depth experience for the users. I have seen VR used primarily for gaming and training but the possibilities are  truly endless! I foresee a digital world being created where we can enter and experience art, music, gaming, video, and so much more. 

Virtual Stupidity (1995) 

I believe the refinements for this new tech will need to bridge certain gaps. Some of these issues that come to mind might be seeing a painting that is 2D in its physical nature but 3D in its visual aspects, or making video purposeful so that the audience not only feels included but that the creator is content on how its conveyed. 

These refinements are but minuscule to a real issue with the future of VR. Let me ask you, what do you think will happen when we create virtual worlds that we enjoy more than our own? Can we say that we will appreciate our true reality more or that it is simply not enough? I don't want you to think that I'm not excited for VR as I have always been interested in and support man's advancements in technology. 

I just want us to create a better future where we put these tools to use so that it's for the betterment of God's Kingdom.

Virtual Reality

Okay, so when I first started hearing about virtual reality, I was not all that interested because I thought it was just a gimmick. I thought it just be a something like 3D in movies that had a ‘cool’ factor but did not really add anything important to the experience. However, after actually getting to use virtual reality on Thursday, I think I can say I was wrong. This technology definitely has possibilities for its use in the future and has the potential to become a great art-form.

The one thing I do still have a problem with is the gear itself. Having the phone attached to a box in front of your face comes off as clunky to me. I feel it’s not enough for me to just have tech be powerful and able to do cool things, I also want it to look nice and be completely user-friendly. I’m sure the gear will eventually get to that point, but I don’t think it’s there yet. None the less, I am still very impressed by VR and think it’s got some real potential.

VR: News and Sisters

So I have to say, I never thought I would have liked VR. I am now quite obsessed with it. There are so many cool things you can do with it. In my field of broadcasting, news reports can now come to life. I found this you tube video on the Japan earthquakes were it was a 360 video where the reporter is talking with you but you can look around you. There are so many applications for this new medium of media. I would really like to start a YouTube channel of making these type of news stories.

I didn’t realizes how realistic and engaging the virtual world until I downloaded the app called Sisters. It is a VR game that takes you into the world of a horror story. I don’t watch too many scary movies because I spend the majority of the time hiding my eyes and covering my ears. But when you are in a VR scary movie, you cannot cover your eyes or plug your ears as easily.  The genius behind this new technology is that the simulation knows exactly where you are looking so it can purposely let you only see certain things in your peripheral vison. And the story line will not move on until you have seen everything that the designer wants you to see.

My brother gets scarred quite easily so I made him watch it.

Virtual Reality

I think virtual reality games are a pretty neat thing and just virtual reality in itself is also pretty amazing. The idea that we can take pictures and art people have made digitally and just add a little something more to make them translate into 3D well is amazing. It's a new dimension of art and gaming that's opened up and it's still relatively new that there's so many things we can add to it. Like the idea of gloves for it so you can feel like you're touching things and being stopped by real things is amazing. I think it'd be great if this continued to be popular and grew more. There's quite a lot of potential. 

Virtual Reality

As a kid I was fascinated with the concept of virtual reality.  Perhaps "obsessed" would be a better word.  It all started with this power rangers virtual reality headset.  It may seem lame to you now in comparison to the technology we saw on Thursday, but when I was seven this was the greatest thing ever.

As I grew older I started to realize that our technology would lag behind my imagination, so I lost interest.  Now I'm finding that our technology is starting to catch up.  That's exciting.

The question was posed in class: How will VR be used? Will it be used for good or bad? I say it depends, but its not up to the CS majors like me its up to the artists like you.  Let me demonstrate with an analogy.  Consider a medical scalpel.  It can be used to perform delicate surgeries to heal people.  It can also be used to stab people to death.  Now in either case it is not up to the engineer that designs the scalpel to decide how it is used. It is up to the intent and skill of the scalpel wielder to determine how its used.  So my hope is that DMA folk will take a hold of VR and use it for some good.

Virtual Reality

The presentation in class was very cool. I did not understand all the tech language the guy used but when he showed us the 360 videos and streams it blew my mind. VR is so cool, especially when we made our own cardboard portable sets. I think that virtual reality is a new form of art. One I do not necessarily understand but one in which thoroughly interests me. I think that virtual reality has the capabilities to do amazing things. The only major con I can see right now is people being so obsessed with VR that they forget the reality they actually live in. Otherwise, VR is super cool and fun to play with.
