Over the years, there have been many different genres and styles of film that have been used by up and coming filmmakers to prove their worth and make way into the industry (horror movies being the most recognizable). Ever since music videos became that proving ground, we've seen all ends of the spectrum. For me, I think it's done best when someone's telling a story on-screen and being visually engaging, rather than the video being made up of footage solely of the band playing instruments. Some of the best artists to do this we've seen work from, like the Chemical Bros., but nowadays with the music scene consisting of lesser-known independent artists, there's nuggets of gold everywhere. That's one of the reasons I love hip hop and rap; there's an artist for every taste. You have artists who have gone the same path as The Gorillaz, like Flying Lotus (who also had a rap moniker, "Captain Murphy," that nobody knew was him till over a year later)and MF DOOM, but also those who have no problem being public and constantly give back to the fans like Run the Jewels and Chance the Rapper do.
Below are a few of my favorites (note: songs and/or videos might be explicit).
G-Eazy - Sad Boy
Childish Gambino - Telegraph Ave.
Tyler, The Creator - She
Kanye West - Good Morning
