Unintentional Inspiration?

Yep, I’m going to talk about Geri’s Game again...

So after having watched Geri’s Game in class and putting some thought into it, I noticed that it was kind of similar to one of my own short films. After thinking about it, I realized that, considering that I’ve seen Geri’s Game before and I have always enjoyed it, it might have unintentionally inspired one of my own short films that I made many months back, Multi-Me. They are primarily similar in that they have the same idea of a person playing a game against himself and having that person try to “cheat” against himself. Now my short film is far from the exact same as Geri’s Game, as it is live action, has dialog and a very different pace to it, and it veers off in a very different direction by the end, but it still starts off with a similar situation to that of Geri’s Game. While I’ve seen Geri’s Game before, when I was making Multi-Me it had been years since I had last watched that film, so it definitely wasn’t at the front of my mind when I was writing and shooting my short film. Still, it seems possible that I might have been subconsciously drawing from parts of Geri’s Game when I was making Multi-Me, considering to the similarities.

So did I really unintentionally pull inspiration from Geri’s Game when making Multi-Me, or am I just going crazy and it all just happened to be a coincidence? I’m not sure. If you want to, check out Multi-Me here, and you can decide.
