The Lunch Date

"The Lunch Date" that we just watched in class was an absolute masterpiece, in my opinion. I just fell utterly in love with it. It was so simplistic and minimalistic, yet it was so effective and evoking.

The entire time the woman is walking around, going about her day, you feel bad for her. You feel bad for her because nothing seems to be going her way. First she gets mugged, then she misses her train, then her salad gets eaten by a stranger.

But that is the beauty of it. It was in fact her that was eating the stranger's salad. And all he did was show her kindness. Never even saying a word, he was able to convey the beauty, kindness, and generosity that can be found inside humans At first I felt pain and sadness because the lady's lunch was being stolen and there was nothing she could do about it. But when he just let her eat, just like that, I felt overwhelmed with joy and happiness. Even more so when we find out that it was his food. That he would just let her eat out of his plate and then bring her some coffee. I just think its a beautiful image.

Although they don't tell you, you already kind of know that it's not her plate. Her bags are missing. So throughout this whole scene, you have this underlying thought/feeling that this is not her booth. As for the man who walks in front of her in one scene, I personally do believe that that was completely unscripted. I think that because it was completely out of the blue, yet it was so raw and fitting that they just left it in there.

I just think this short film was a masterpiece. With just a couple of words, this short film has the ability to get in touch with the beauty, kindness, and generosity of human kind.
