The presentation of an image is a very important tool in
storytelling. Whether it’s a shot in a film or the picture created in our minds
from reading a book, image is a key component in how a person views the story.
As a person who’s very interested in cinematography, I love good shots in films
that create interesting images and creative compositions. When a movie has
great imagery and cinematography combined with a great story, the imagery will
build on the story and get the viewer to understand things and feel emotions he
would not be able to with just the writing alone.
The clip from the film, Pleasantville, created great imagery
through its use of color and black and white, and use of the seasons cycle we
talked about in class. I enjoyed the way things started in black and white and
gradually changed to color, slowly turning a mundane, uninteresting world into
a colorful and lively one. The use of the spring season also helped add to this
lively feel. After the black and white/winter creating the feeling of death, the
spring created that feeling of birth/rebirth.
