Entertainment vs. A Challenge

Do people watch the arts, or media, for the purposes of entertainment or for a challenging experience? You can definitely obtain both from something such as watching a movie. For example, the movies we watched in class. I can definitely say that I found those movies more of a challenge rather than entertaining. I look back and I simply wish that I could’ve at least enjoyed them more for their beauty. I was trying too hard to search for that “deep/philosophical’ meaning behind them.

Having said that, I personally watch movies more from the entertainment point of view. I don’t generally watch a movie to get a challenging experience. Movies like the Transformers series. They are really, pretty stupid but I still enjoy watching them because they are entertaining. But there are some movies out there that I enjoy watching that, I feel, hit the perfect balance of entertaining and challenging. Some examples are Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and Inception. They are very entertaining and visually pleasing, but at the same time they lead you to ask questions and challenge your thinking. Another movie that I really enjoy is "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". Now this movie is entertaining, but it’s not what you’d call challenging. Rather, it carries a deeper meaning to it, one that has moved a lot of people who have watched this movie. This movie goes along the lines of a renewal or rebirth of someone as they escape their mundane lives and do what you'd call "live life to the fullest".

But yeah, I generally watch movies for the entertainment they bring. But from time to time I really enjoy a movie that brings about deeper thinking.
