Can Video Games be Considered Art?

So this is a little off topic but its something I have talked about with friends recently and i figured it might be something we could touch on in class. Today video games are more prominent than ever in our daily lives. Almost everyone has some kind of video game they enjoy whether it is candy crush on their I-phone, the newest version of Call of duty, or even just an old N64 to play Mario Cart on. In 2011 video games were legally recognized as an art form but does that mean they are really art? What makes art? Aesthetics? Composition? Sound? Entertainment? A deeper meaning?  It is difficult to classify video games as art because nobody really knows what art is. There are certainly beautiful video games out there like Firewatch and there are even games that might make you cry like "That Dragon, Cancer". I'm just not sure that those qualities alone can make something art. Are the the massive Triple A Title games art? Is it just the indie games? What about classics like the Mario Bros? I am not sure where all of you stand on the subject but i would like to know how you feel about it because I think its an interesting subject. With all that said, I do believe that a video game done right can certainly be art. "That Dragon, Cancer" has got to be one of the most developed games i have ever played. there is real content there that will make you think about things on a deeper level than any other game could make you. If video games can be considered art then there need to be more like it. It's a relatively new form of media but it certainly has potential.
